Teeth - Key Scene

The scene is set in a normal everyday hospital room and therefore is even more shocking to the audience as they visit a doctor on a regular bases and wouldn't expect any horror from it. In this key scene the main character Dawn decides to visit the doctor after she is raped by a friend and manages to castrate him using her vagina. She becomes worried and confused of what happened as she remained a virgin until then and is desperate to find out if her vagina is abnormal and if the old folk tale called 'Vagina Dentata' lives inside of her. This scene is constructed in a very strange way as the doctor examining her is a man who doesn't really take her concern seriously. After questioning Dawn if she knew what to expect the Doctor says ''Don't worry I'm not gonna bite ya'' this almost makes the situation humorous due to the dramatic irony but also foreshadows that something bad is going to happen and it will be more than a check up. He then asks her to 'scoot down' on the bed so she is closer to him; he does this in a very non professional way making him appear differently to how a doctor should act. Acting frightened and worried Dawn talks about what she thinks is going and describes it in a way that does not seem normal at all, the doctor acts like he knows exactly what is wrong and relates it to puberty. Dawn is asked whether she is sexually active and firstly replies ''No'' due to her beliefs and after hesitation replies 'Yes' as she remembers she was raped and is determined to find out what is wrong with her. With a creepy tone the doctor says 'In this room there are no judgements made, deal?' this could be relating to himself and Dawn. This allows the audience to discover he is a secretive man and is obviously up to no good. The doctor then takes of one of his gloves and this questions the audience of his actions. After examining her vagina he asks her 'hows this' and she replies 'shouldn't you tell me' - this portrays how the doctor doesn't actually know what's his doing and also how it isn't really the question he should be asking a patient, he brings a light towards her vagina and looks at it in a smug way allowing you to recognise he is a pervert/creep. He lubricates the un-gloved hand and fiercely shoves it inside of her in a aggressive sexual way this finally shows how everything normal in the frame has been made surreal and appear frightening. After seeing she's in pain he continues and just tells her to breathe through it like it is a normal thing a doctor should be doing, he now has full control over Dawn and makes her seem inferior. He mentions to her that she is 'tight' and he immediately responds 'relax' as she moans showing his anger and allows the audience to identify him as a rapist. After taking so much pain the teeth inside of her then react by biting his fingers and he then realises that something is really inside of her! Both characters panic and scream back at each other bringing a hint of comedy to the scene and as if what he has done is funny. She tries to escape but drags him along with her and his hand remains locked inside of her. The lock is released and his fingers are bit off. The characters both continue screaming and the doctor shouts out that the myth is true. Within this scene the most important micro feature is the characters performance as the role of the doctor is an example of turning something normal and friendly into something abnormal and frightening.
